While the new DSM helps transsexuals, it fails the transgender community as a whole. People who cross dress are still regarded as mentally ill and as such have the same crap to deal with in medical care. I wont get to see my cross dressing friends get the same privileges and respect that they deserve.
In addition, as Karaus has mentioned, we may not be ill but we are still disordered. As such, there are still negative stigmas placed on transsexuals that reap havoc on a societal, legal, and medical level. Also, many doctors dont follow The World Professional Association of Transgender Health's (WPATH) standards of care (SoC), so even if they do change it, trans* people will still have many of the same problems that they already have when seeming medical care of all types.
What we do need is for all the different governments around the world to stop being bigots, to actually pass legislation that requires trans* people to be offered the proper medical care they need, to outlaw discrimination, and to take a very hard look at the gender binary that they have allowed to destroy themselves.
